Understanding legal terms
The words you will meet in Laos
- Land Use Rightສິດນຳໃຊ້ທີ່ດິນ
- Land belongs to the national community and is managed by the state. Foreign investors lease the right to use it for a fixed term rather than owning it.
- Enterprise Registrationການຈົດທະບຽນວິສາຫະກິດ
- The registration that brings a company into legal existence in the Lao PDR and allows it to begin operating its approved activities.
- Investment Licenceໃບອະນຸຍາດລົງທຶນ
- The approval required for concession activities and certain controlled sectors before investment can proceed, in addition to company registration.
- Special Economic Zoneເຂດເສດຖະກິດພິເສດ
- A designated area with its own administration and incentive package for investors operating inside it.
- Arbitrationອະນຸຍາໂຕຕຸລາການ
- A private process where an arbitrator makes a binding decision. A foreign award must be certified by a Lao court before it can be enforced in Laos.
- Mediationການໄກ່ເກ່ຍ
- A neutral third party helps both sides reach a settlement they agree to. Often the fastest and least costly route to resolve a dispute.

Which services do you offer, and in which languages?
Corporate law, foreign investment, commercial contracts, dispute resolution, and licensing, compliance and legal translation. This website is published in seven languages; tell us your preferred working language and we will confirm what our team can offer for your matter.
Can a foreign company own land in Laos?
No. Land in Laos is held by the national community and managed by the state. Foreign companies lease land use rights instead, commonly 30 years from a Lao citizen or up to 50 years from the government. Putting land in a Lao person's name on your behalf is not legal and gives you nothing you can enforce. We structure land rights the way the law actually allows.
What happens if a deal goes wrong?
Plan for it before you sign. Foreign investors rarely use the Lao courts, and a foreign arbitration award still has to be certified by a Lao court before it means anything here. So we build the dispute route into the contract at the drafting stage, and we settle most matters by negotiation or mediation before positions harden.
How long does licensing actually take?
Company registration in Vientiane has come down to roughly 15 days. Sector permits vary widely, and offices outside the capital can be slower. At the first meeting we give you the realistic timeline for your sector, not the best case.
